Following "The Street Queen" episode, I found some interesting Youtube videos that show the young homeless population in the Haight Ashbury district. I also found a song named Haight Street by musical group Anberlin. Take a look and a listen.
This blog is about a new MTV series called "World of Jenks" and will provide other information based on its episodes. Andrew Jenks is a film maker and the namesake and creator of the show. Jenks and his crew moves in with a different person every week in hopes of learning more about that person in a week's time. He tries to teach the viewers that there is more to someone than the eye can see. Jenks seeks out to prove that tried and true cliché that one can't judge a book by its cover.
This is ridiculous. These lazy drugged out Haight St kids CHOSE to be homeless. They peddle in one of the richer areas of SF because they want to be hippies or Kerouac. How about showcasing the plight of real homeless people in SF? Or was MTV too afraid of strolling through the Tenderloin and having to see and smell the true gritty reality of poverty and homelessness? Maybe the folks down there don't have trendy piercings or cellphones but they are good people with a lot of bad luck. Shame on you, MTV.

ReplyDeleteYou're not the first to comment on a post of mine voicing their disappointment with how World of Jenks decides to document their subjects. MTV/ World of Jenks could have done a better job of documenting the life of someone who is homeless because of a series of unfortunate events in their life, not because they chose to leave their home. Granted, the home life of Danielle, the homeless girl World of Jenks followed around for a week, was not a healthy nor a safe one but I think there could've been some sort of steps that could've been made on her behalf where homelessness was the very last resort.
MTV wants to tell the truth, but not the whole truth, it seems.
